Yaxchilan

From the Yaxchilan ruins in Chiapas, along the border with Guatemala, deep within what was Zapatista territory for awhile. This site has some of the best friezes, the best of which are at the Anthropology Museum in Mexico City. I'm back in New York now, and I'll only post a few of my pictures. I only got one roll scanned. There were some places in Mexico where you could burn your digital camera memory card onto a CD for a fee. This bodes well for long-term travel with digital cameras. Like cybercafes, there's a developing 'mobility infrastructure' to support digital camera use independent of computers.

A small alebrije wood carving I got in Oaxaca. Alebrijes seem like a typical Mexican artesania but are in fact the creation of a single person, Pedro Linares.

Taxis in Mexico City are Volkswagen Beetles painted green and white. They're called "bochos" [bugs] by the locals. They have kind of a bad reputation for robberies and whatnot but I just think they're so cute. This picture is of a matchbox toy taxi. Mexico City is big but not the biggest city in the world. I've read estimates of the population anywhere between 16 and 30 million. The actual number seems to be around 20 million and, interesting, the net migration trend is away from the city, as noted in this recent article; Chilangos Fleeing DF.
