There's been some crabby yapping about the replacement of the old Walk/Don't Walk signs around New York. I have to say that I'm quite a fan of the new signs' blinding luminescence. They're like little outposts of Times Square, scattered across the city. Also, according to the official press release, they'll
actually save the city a lot of money.

Eduardo Galeano, Uruguayan writer of the incomparable Memory of Fire trilogy, has an instructive piece about the historical roots of the present crisis in Bolivia.

49th St & 7th Ave on the N,R,W. According
to Forgotten NY's Modern Subway page, this
was the first of the Burnt Orange stations
and the groovy color was chosen by Philip
Johnson himself.

I would love to see an apartment building
clad in this shocking color instead of usual
white-glazed brick.
